Music for the new year - Designer Drugs

You may recognise one of their most popular songs, 'Drop Down' from an advert for 'Skins'. The duo are a club/electro/house duo from New York, and produce some of the hottest tracks around.
The ultra-stylish duo are set to start a US and Canadian tour on new years eve, so for all the UK kids that won't be able to make any of the shows, here is a track that will kick off your night into 2011 with a bang!

Video of the Week - Coco Recording with Subfocus

Slightly different approach this week. Instead of a music video here's a montage of clips with Eliot 'Coco' Sumner of I Blame Coco writing and recording for Subfocus' track 'Splash'. It gives an insight as to how she writes her music and sneak peaks of what were originally the lyrics before changing them. Enjoy!

Video of the Week - The Drums - 'Forever and Ever Amen'

So last night I was supposed to be seeing The Drums and writing a full review for you all. Even though the weather has been bad I managed to travel up to the North East to Newcastle and battle through it. Unfortunately, Northumbria University (where the band were set to play) cancelled the gig even though the band fought to keep it on and even went through soundcheck after travelling 14 hours from Dublin.

The band posted this on their website: "Hi Everyone, it’s Jonny, Jacob and Connor. We were just informed that due to the rules here in Newcastle, the show has been canceled tonight. We traveled 14 hours to get here, did our soundcheck, and just were told we can’t play and there is nothing we can do about it. It kills us that this is happening. We will be back soon and make it up to you. Love, The Drums."

Hopefully they will reschedule to a time where I'll be able to get back up there. In the mean time, here's a personal favourite.

White Lies New Single - 'Bigger Than Us'

London's White Lies are back with a bang with this greatly anticipated new single. There was a feeling of grandeur with ‘To Lose My Life…’ (the album), and the new single should stir up similar emotions. It tells of ill-starred romance, and features gripping tremolo guitar chords. ‘Bigger Than Us’, the first single from White Lies’s second album, is available digitally on iTunes now and will be available physically on the 3rd January 2010 from Fiction Records. ‘Ritual’ the album follows on 17 January 2010. You can catch the trio on tour in February.

"It's about love with a bit of religion in there as well – a lot of religious imagery," frontman Harry McVeigh said of the album. "Things like that, they're all rituals. Things you associate with your day-to-day life, but they're also habits." (NME)

Video of the Week - Hurts - 'Stay'

By now, it doesn't take a musical genius, or even someone of high intelligence to see that HURTS are not the most commercial act out there. In fact, they're probably so un-commercial right now, calling them any kind of 'act out there' would be nothing short of optimistic. Their first single 'Better Than Love' failed to get promoted and despite being their best single to date, underperformed at #50. Then, upon releasing 'Wonderful Life', whose protagonist was a pre-suicidal man, they gained more recognition, but still failed to make the Top 20, charting just outside, at #21.

Their latest single 'Stay' is set to top both of these, with features on many popular TV shows such as 'Hollyoaks' to promote it, and already over a million hits on Youtube.

Canada's finest electropopfunk poutfit Chromeo and La Roux have reshaped Chromeo's 'Hot Mess' track into an awesome floorfiller oozing with dancefloor destruction potential.
'Hot Mess' is featured on Chromeo's latest album Business Casual, which was released a few months ago.

My VIP tickets to the NME Awards Tour have been confirmed - Thanks Alice Glass!

Full review will be coming up in February! Hopefully I'll get chance to ask the duo a few questions too.

Video of the Week - Bat For Lashes - 'Trophy' (Lollapalooza 2009)

Taken from the album 'Fur and Gold', 'Trophy' is one of my favourites. The solid bass line throughout teamed with Natasha Khan's soft vocals gives this track an eerie, dark, yet beautiful feel to it.

Track Review - Wild Beasts - 'The Devil's Crayon'

As much as I don't understand the random squeaks and squeals Wild Beasts produce vocally, I do like this track. The vocals are some what White Lies-eqsue when the lead singer sings properly. The bands popularity has seemed to increase lately, even though they released their first single, 'Brave Bulging Buoyant Clairvoyants', on Bad Sneakers Records back in November 2006. Their current album was also Mercury award nominated. Personally I'm not a fan as I'm put off by the high pitched vocals - I find that they spoil most tracks that could be really good, however this track is more pleasing than the rest. The moderately up-beat tempo teamed with a catchy twinkled melody in the background make this track very hard not to be on a "to download" list.

Check them out for yourselves!

Crystal Castles - Leeds Met, October 2010

Unluckily I'll be unable to write a full review on this gig, as after 5-6 tracks I was dragged out and soon after taken to hospital in an ambulance. I was lucky enough to have Alice Glass herself come out to make sure I was okay, even if the first aid people ignored her. I was offered VIP tickets and a drink from her for the next gig, so hopefully then I'll get the chance to write a little more.

Health was the support act, and the original 'Crimewave' Crystal Castles track was by them, although Crystal Castles gave it their own touch. There was an hour wait until the band came on stage and the crowd exploded. Every expectation of their live performance was met, and more on top of that. Alice crawled onto the crowds heads and dangled above me as she sang. The claustrophobic atmosphere and all round roughness of the gig made it hard for anyone to come out without an injury, and unluckily for me I was the only one to be carted off in an ambulance. However, after meeting Alice through this it was completely worth it.

One of the main songs that stood out through my semi-consciousness was 'Baptism'. The crowd moved to the beat as the music seemed to pulse through everyone. Alice's live performance was unique, exciting and memorable, and Ethan held it all together by playing the music to accompany her. (Short video I took of 'Baptism' shown in this post).

I would recommend any Crystal Castles fan to go and see them, although it definitely isn't for the faint hearted.

Ones to Watch - R O M A N C E

R O M A N C E are a rock band based in London consisting of four members including one highly energetic lead singer. The band not only sound good but look good, and have great appeal all round.

After seeing them support I Blame Coco, I was pleasantly surprised by this band. Their live performance was exciting and engrossing and even though the majority of the people surrounding me didn't seem to know who they were, they were all saying how good they were once the band had left the stage (even if we were all a little deaf by that time).

They are supporting Manic Street Preachers on a couple of dates, then will be touring the country with The Cult and are definitely worth checking out. If you're attending any of the gigs make sure you get down early and give them the chance to impress you like they did the Coco crowd.

(Seeing as this week has practically been Coco week) Video of the Week - Sub Focus ft. Coco - 'Splash'

In return for Sub Focus remixing an I Blame Coco track, Coco was asked to sing on the track 'Splash'. Even though Sub Focus are primarily a drum & bass act, if you aren't a fan of this genre but a fan of Coco you will still love this. Her haunting vocals give it that unique Coco edge that fans crave. In an interview she stated that she usually writes lyrics after writing the music for a song, yet found it difficult writing for someone else's track.

I Blame Coco - Urban Outfitters acoustic session and Leeds University gig, October 2010

After seeing and meeting the band last week I decided to go and see them again in Leeds. The free Urban Outfitters set had an okay turn out and the main gig itself was in a smaller venue than Sheffield, which I liked. I was lucky to catch up with Coco again after both sets as she recognised me in the crowd and came over to say hi (she is also one of the nicest artists you could ever meet). She spoke about her hangover from going out in Glasgow the night before and how she's going to New York to visit family after the final dates of her tour.

The Urban Outfitters set started a little shakey as the bassist had wandered off upstairs, leaving Coco (Eliot Sumner) shouting him and gaining an awkward silence while people waited for his return. She jokingly stated she's better at singing than speaking so after a couple of shakey attempts at talking to the crowd she decided to just run through the short set list. For a model, come actress, come singer, she was surprisingly more shy than anyone else in the room!

As it was only a short set they played their most popular songs and included their new single 'In Spirit Golden', which is released on the 1st of November (live recording featured in the video). Coco's voice, style and persona make up for her timidness in between performances, as when she sings all those possible insecurities seem to go away.

The main gig was just as good, if not better than the Sheffield set. A few of her old school friends were in the audience (which I think gave her a slight confidence boost) and I got the chance to stand and talk to Coco and the group after the gig had finished. We chatted about that fact a few of the songs on the album, such as 'The Constant' (which is the title of the album), weren't performed, and she said the band were not provided with enough funding and couldn't play the full track list, which was a shame. Nevertheless the group definitely didn't disappoint and a buzzing crowd stayed behind for the club night after.

Coco is tipped to be playing big venues next year as her popularity is quickly increasing. I would highly recommend seeing them if you have the chance.

I Blame Coco - Sheffield University, October 2010

As this was my third time seeing the band, I knew I wouldn't be disappointed. The only negative thing about the set was the fact the rest of the crowd and I wanted more. The intimate venue for this gig also created a great atmosphere for everyone.

I Blame Coco started the set with 'Self Machine', one of their singles. This received a good response from the crowd and Coco stopped singing at one point to take in the fact that everyone was singing the song back to her. She looked slightly surprised by this and continued soon after with a smile on her face. As the set progressed Coco made her way around the stage, grabbed hands of the audience while singing and did her quirky dancing throughout each track. She also showed off her guitar skills for a couple of slower songs, making it evident that she's an all round performer, not just a distinctive sounding singer.

The entire band work well together and show great enthusiasm throughout every gig and every track, which is a very important factor as this way not all the attention is centred around Stings rebellious daughter.

The band finished with one of their most popular tracks 'Caesar' (which on the single features Robyn). This gained an awesome and lively reaction and the crowd as it was also their last song.

It was a shame that there was no encore from the band, as everyone waited where they were, expecting more. However, this gave me the chance to leave the venue and go round and find the band where I stood talking to the them for a while. They were all really friendly and Coco welcomed me with open arms, even offering me a cigarette. I had heard that she was quite shy, but with a can of Carlsberg in her hand (even after allegedly quitting drinking after a skull fracture) she was really talkative and happy to stand with me for quite a while. As there was also no one else there it gave me the opportunity to ask her a few prominent questions.

I asked her what it was like to be the daughter of a megastar, and if this made people make snap judgements about her. She told Insight Music that everyone is entitled to their own opinion of her, although from getting to know her she isn't like her dad or wanting the fame from being in his shadow. She also stated that she isn't a 'daddy's girl' at all. After previously being a model and actress, she has followed different ladders off her own back, without name dropping her father. A lot of people are actually surprised when they find out that she is Sting's offspring.

I asked her about her favourite gigs so far in the UK. She spoke about Evolution Festival in Newcastle (which was previously reviewed by Insight Music), and said she thoroughly enjoyed the atmosphere there. She also joked about the fact someone threw a tennis ball on stage, and when she threw it back into the crowd it hit someone on the forehead and she struggled to continue the song after apologising for it due to embarrassment.

I Blame Coco are continuing their UK tour right now, and Coco is also doing small acoustic sets in Urban Outfitters stores. One of which will be in Leeds and Insight Music will provide a short review for that also. All the Urban Outfitters sets are completely free, so get check the dates and get yourselves down to the stores early to save disappointment!

Rodeo Massacre (Supporting I Blame Coco) - One worth listening to

After not hearing of this band before I was pleasantly surprised by them. Their quirky image teamed with vintage instruments gives them a different feel to quite a few bands out there at the moment.
The trio class themselves as psychedelic rock for the 21st century, and consist of singer Izzy, guitar and drummer (at the same time might I add) Zorba and Pat Dam Smyth or organ and bass (the organ of which had a makeshift stand made out of milk crates).

Even though the venue was only just filling up at the time, the band created a good atmosphere and a few members of the crowd even knew the words to a few of the songs and sang along. For the final song Izzy even handed tambourines to a couple of people in the crowd and had them play along with the song.

Video of the Week - Everything Everything - 'My Kz, Ur Bf'

Everything Everything are the group on everyones lips at the moment. With artists such as Ellie Goulding eagerly anticipating their gigs and rating them highly afterwards, even existing artists are wanting a piece of the action.

MY KZ, UR BF (My Keys, Your Boyfriend), which has fans throwing their arms in the air from the first eerie, sustained synth note, widens into an Ibiza-style breakdown, with the chorus prompting a mass singalong. This band are definitely ones to watch in the future as they are quickly on the rise.

Whatever happened to... Test Icicles?

Test Icicles were a short-lived dance punk band that formed in England, primarily influenced by indie rock but containing musical elements from a variety of genres (notably hip-hop, crossover thrash and punk). The band was formed in 2004 by Rory Attwell and Sam Mehran, who were later joined by Devonte Hynes. Hynes and Mehran were both only 18 years old at the time of the band's conception. In February 2006, the band announced they were splitting up. In an interview with NME in March 2006, Hynes claimed that "We were never, ever that keen on the music. I understand that people liked it, but we personally, er, didn't.".

After the band split, the individual members continued to stay active, becoming involved in a number of side projects between them.
Attwell formed RAT:ATT:AGG (later known as 'Wrists'), who had a small number of releases and remixed for bands such as Fake Shark - Real Zombie! and The Kills. The band announced their official split on 30 November 2007 and offered fans free downloads of their songs. Attwell has since gone on to play drums and guitar in KASMs, leaving in April 2010. He now works as a producer under the alias Brattwell Recordings.
Hynes currently records under the name Lightspeed Champion (also signed to Domino Records) and in early 2008 released a successful album entitled 'Falling Off the Lavender Bridge'. Hynes has also collaborated with the band Whirlwind Heat under the name Lightspeed Heat. In 2007 they released a 7" EP. This, however, was another one off side project.
Mehran is believed to have moved back to America after the split and is claimed to have been spotted working in a record store in New York. It is also believed he is no longer in contact with his former bandmates. Mehran now works in several projects under the alias Sam Meringue. Some include - Matrix Metals, Yoga, Explorers, Wingdings, Foxy Baby, Outer Limits Recordings & The Sweethearts.

The XX cover Robin S - 'Show Me Love'

Just a rough video, as I struggled to find the track anywhere else, but this is another perfect remix by The XX. Other remixes that the trio have done also consist of tracks such as You've Got the Love (Candi Station/Florence and the Machine), which gained them a lot of recognition towards the end of 2009.
The band are currently on tour in America and recently won a Mercury Prize for their debut album 'XX'. Band member Jamie Smith's solo single 'far nearer' also hit the airwaves on September 28th.

Video of the Week - The Knife - 'Heartbeats'

I think this video/track deserves video of the week, simply because a lot of people relate this track to the Jose Gonzales cover instead of the original, as the cover was used in a Sony advert. This Swedish electro pop duo, formed in 1999 have inspired many artists from La Roux to Florence and the Machine to Crystal Castles. Andersson also released a solo album under the name Fever Ray in 2009.

White Lies to Release New Album in January

The currently untitled album is set to include 'Holy Ghost', 'The Power And The Glory', 'Bigger Than Us', 'Is Love?', 'Streetlights' and 'Come Down'. Despite hopes of the new album delivering the same kind of appeal enjoyed by their debut, bassist Charles Cave told NME the band were not searching for a mainstream feel while working on the new material. “For a long time I thought we had an album of quite inaccessible music,” he said. “No-one had given us the thumbs up that this was going to be commercially appealing.”

White Lies quickly became one of hottest acts of 2009 after appearing on the BBC’s Sound of 2009 poll, before landing the BRIT Critics’ Choice and the Q Magazine Best New Artist awards not long after. With the release of their debut album in the January of that year the hype was instantly justified, as the band delivered a record of rare maturity and depth for a first release, and enjoyed significant chart success with the singles ‘Death‘, ‘To Lose My Life‘ and ‘Farewell To The Fairground‘.

The Drums - Line Up Update

As fans will already know, The Drums' Adam Kessler has quit the band. "There have been some questions as to recent events and we are sorry to say that Adam has left The Drums." Kessler was present at the Leeds and Reading festivals, and there has been no further reasons as to why Kessler left as they started their first US tour.

Although this has been a devastating time for the band, frontman Jonathan Pierce told NME that band friend Tom Haslow is to play Kessler's parts on the band's US tour, which they are currently midway through.

Despite al this, the UK tour and all other live commitments are said to be going on as planned!
Insight Music will also be providing a full live review for the Newcastle tour date!

The Kills' Jamie Hince premiere's debut film as a director (Video of the Week With a Twist)

The film, a collaboration with director Tom Beard, was premiered at the Number One Leicester Square club in London on Wednesday night (September 22) in front of an audience including Hince's girlfriend Kate Moss and Florence And The Machine's Florence Welch.

The short film can be watched below.

Hurts - The 80's all over again?

Music right now needs a band like Hurts. Although a lot of artists and groups try to imitate the 80's (through both fashion and music style), Hurts do this without the cringe and 'try hard' atmosphere.

'Wonderful Life', the debut single from the Manchester synth pop band is one that can be recognised without even realising where you heard it from. Its well-spoken vocals, slick chrome synths and dance beats have drifted from this band since late last year and have been favourites on Radio One.

The dates on their latest tour are selling out fast, so if they haven't already sold out near you I'd be quick to check them out and buy a ticket!

Video of the Week - Florence and the Machine - 'Heavy in Your Arms'

This song was originally made for the Twilight Saga Eclipse soundtrack, and after gaining such an awesome response, Florence decided to release it as a single. Personally, this is one of my favourite Florence tracks, and deserves to be known beyond the world of Twilight fans. Flo's powerful voice is gaining her recognition around the globe, and I believe herself and her machine will go far.

Originally, Florence created 'Robot and the Machine', which consisted of herself and computed generated music, however she found this too difficult to gain the sound she wanted and now has live musicians playing every single instrument on stage - an atmosphere that twinned with her powerful vocals creates an epic live experience.

Kap Bambino - The French electronic music duo

Born in October 2001, as well as their own label WWILKO, Kap Bambino (the French Orion Bouvier and Caroline Martial) plays an effective and energetic contemporary electronic music. Based on incisive rythms, intoxicating riffs and dyslexic lyrics, this music defies classification. Out of control, it is sometimes pop and melancholic, sometimes skinned-raw, but always agressive. They try to exist in the fringe of the actual French musical movement, like some no-futur bastards, totally devoted to non-stop amazing performance. They can perform all their live shows as if they play with their own lives. On stage, the Kap Bambino impressive turmoil has an identity of its own - playful, wild and without compromising.

I would recommend Kap Bambino for many people into trashy electronic music, especially fans of Crystal Castles. Like Crystal Castles, Kap Bambino are known for their energetic and excited live performances. Featured in magazines such as NME and Dazed and Confused, and singer Caroline being listed amongst the "hottest new models .. in London and New York", the all-round talented duo have also independently toured all over Europe, Japan and Mexico.

Video of the Week - Crystal Castles - 'Baptism' (Live)

Seeing as next month there will be a full review of their live performance, I thought I'd include this as this weeks 'Video of the Week'. Alice Glass is known well for her on-stage persona and the way she presents herself and the music. Its a shame that, in my opinion, Ethan Kath gets overshadowed by this when they perform - as he is the true genius behind the music, and the founder of Alice Glass from her old band, Fetus Fatale at the age of 15.

I Blame Coco - The Constant

I Blame Coco is captained by Sting’s daughter Coco Sumner (real name Eliot Pauline Styler Sumner, 19), with support from Joy Joseph and Raphael Mann from Mr Hudson & The Library on drums and bass.

It’s fair to say that Coco is no stranger to the spotlight; as well as being a part-time actress who had a supporting role in the film Stardust, she’s also a model who was featured in Burberry’s spring/summer 2008 advertising campaign alongside Agyness Deyn.

Now as Coco descends onto the music scene, she is already encountering skepticism bordering on hostility towards her well-connected career-move. Some may argue that she is only doing so because she can but despite her privileges and connections, Coco insists that whilst she ‘loves them (her parents) to death, this is not about them. This is what I do and what I have to say.’

If the pressure to prove everyone wrong has concerned Coco then you certainly can’t tell judging by her mature, effervescent and uber-confident on-stage demeanor.

Coco, unsurprisingly, was surrounded by music from an early age and began playing guitar when she was just 4 years old. Having worked on her debut album singularly since the age of 15, she scrapped it all in the autumn of last year and re-wrote it to her own, exact specifications.

After experimenting with ska and reggae, Coco stumbled on her thumping electro-rock sound by accident. ‘I couldn’t find a guitarist, so I started messing around on a keyboard and that suited the songs much better.’ A trip to Stockholm resulted in a link-up with producer Klas and female singer Robyn, who provides backing vocals on Caesar.

'The Constant' is the debut album by the british Electropop act.

Tracklist:
1 "Self Machine"
2 "In Spirit Golden"
3 "Quicker"
4 "Turn Your Back On Love"
5 "Please Rewind"
6 "Summer Rain"
7 "Playwright Fate"
8 "The Constant"9 "Party Bag
10 "No Smile"
11 "Caesar" (featuring Robyn)
12 "Only Love Can Break Your Heart"
13 "It's About To Get Worse"

Video of the Week - The Smiths - 'This Charming Man'

'This Charming Man' was The Smiths' second single in October 1983, written by guitarist Johnny Marr and singer Morrissey. The song is defined by Marr's jangle pop guitar riff and Morrissey's characteristically morose lyrics, which revolve around the recurrent Smiths themes of sexual ambiguity and lust.

Video of the Week - The Drums - 'Best Friend'

I personally like the simplicity of this video, and twinned with one of my personal favourites of the album (reviewed previously) I think this easily deserves video of the week. Following seeing them headlining in Newcastle in November will be a full live review.

Two Door Cinema Club - An Introduction

It's easy to imagine that one of the biggest issues Two Door Cinema Club is going to face in the future is being pigeonholed as 'just another indie band'. But before you make that judgment, you'd be wise to give them a listen or two.
Two Door Cinema Club are an electropop/indie rock band from Bangor and Donaghadee, Northern Ireland formed in 2007. An EP "Four Words To Stand On" was released in January 2009 and was positively received by critics. They are now signed to fashionable French record label Kitsuné Music, through which they released their debut album Tourist History on 1 March 2010. The band consists of Alex Trimble (lead vocals, guitar, synths, beats), Sam Halliday (guitar and vocals) and Kevin Baird (bass and vocals).

The band’s name came about after one of the members misprounced the name of local cinema Tudor Cinema, and this stuck. NME stated "Two Door’s stuttering yet spiky songs are tighter than a snake’s bumhole in a sandstorm". Their influences range from Bloc Party to Modest Mouse to Death Cab for Cutie, but together have created their own sound. The bands songs are so genuinely catchy and show so much enthusiasm its hard to not rate them highly. What makes Two Door even more genuine are the fact they don't claim to be something different or original - they just provide upbeat, uplifting and feel good songs that a crowd can dance to. The band are clearly confident in both musical ability and songwriting skills, which constantly shows. Even though the band has no drummer, they create catchy beats and backing music using a laptop whilst using guitar/bass/vocals/synths over the top. Having no drummer can sometimes be tricky, although for this band it seems to be a positive trait.

Here is one of their tracks, 'Something Good Can Work' acoustic. This particular version in my opinion shows their talents a little more raw and unmastered. This is one of my particular favourites of the album, along with 'Cigarettes in the Theatre' and 'Come Back Home'.

Two Door Cinema Club have opened for a number of bands including; AutoKratz, Delphic, Foals and Metronomy, played the Red Bull Bedroom Jam Futures Stage at T in the Park, the main stage at Oxegen Festival and at the Benicassim festival in 2010 and toured the UK in March 2010, however it seems only now they are being put in the spotlight and recognised more. They will be playing Leeds/Reading Festival this year and embark on a bigger solo tour starting in September 2010- of which one date I will be attending.

La Roux - Sidetracked

Electro pop duo La Roux have been tapped for the second edition of Sidetracked, a mix series on Renaissance.

News of the mix comes a year after the release of La Roux's self-titled debut album, which promptly launched the duo to international stardom, penetrating charts in the US and Europe with tunes like "Bulletproof" and "In for the Kill."

Sidetracked presents a diverse array of newer tunes and older gems, beginning with "I Second That Emotion" by '80s post-punk group Japan and coursing through selections by Fever Ray, Heaven 17 and French electro act Kavinsky. Frontwoman Elly Jackson says of the compilation: "It's a really nice snapshot of both our musical influences. Crystal Castles - Crystal Castles (II), Album Review

Crystal Castles are a duo consisting of producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass from Toronto. Their experimental electronic sound is both loved and hated by many people, although personally I'm a lover of them. They are known for their chaotic live shows (including climbing the sides of stages at Leeds Festival and throwing drum kits into the audience) and lo-fi home productions.

The duo have gone from amazing to even better with their new album. After the previous album's catchy electronic melodies, eerie beats and Alice Glass' vocal persona - the next album was definitely one that had to have something different and more exciting to improve on the last. In my opinion 'Crystal Castles (II)' lived up to my expectations of being more mind blowing than the previous.

The album starts off with 'Fainting Spells', kicking off with Alice Glass' low screams and breathing, slowly bringing in a low electronic beat and melody. It isn't one of the best on the album, so I was quick to skip this one half way though when first hearing it.

'Celestica' however has a completely different feel. It has a softer introduction, with a low, melodic electric pattern. Alice's vocals are also softer here, and we can hear the lyrics a lot clearer than most of Crystal Castles' songs. One of my personal favourites of the album, 'Celestica' shows the duo in a more different light. The only song I could twin this with from the previous album is possibly 'Courtship Dating', as that track was also less aggressive and had a soft melody behind it. 'Celestica' could been seen as almost trance-like, as the backing throughout the song wouldn't seem out of place in a popular dance track. However, the uses of electronic glitches and unique vocals make this track instantly recognisable as Crystal Castles.

'Doe Deer' has the stereotypical aggressiveness of Crystal Castles. It starts off with a running pattern repeated throughout the track and has Alice's vocals more distorted - making it hard to make out what she's supposed to be saying. After looking up the lyrics on the internet all she does is repeat "deathray deathray". The lyrics written by the duo don't tend to make too much sense most of the time, so this is not out of character.

Probably my favourite track of the new album, 'Batism' starts off trance-like as in 'Celestica'. However the track then goes quiet, leaving a simple electronic melody to continue - a highly intoxicating sound to say how minimalistic it is. When the vocals kick in however, it goes back to the trance sound - but continues to go back to the simple melody in between each verse/chorus/general mash of shouting. It never ceases to amaze me how Crystal Castles manage to make the simplest of samples become so memorable and catchy.

'Year of Silence' starts off with a sort of melodic pulse sound followed by male vocals this time, chanting and repeating the same thing over and over - also being overlapped by a higher toned male voice chanting, almost like a call and response theme. Light textures of electronic sounds float over the top, eventually filling up gaps in the piece. This track has a more moody based sound to it - lowering the tones following 'Baptism'.

'Empathy' and 'Suffocation' both have a less aggressive and harsh sound. Together they create a more relaxed atmosphere in comparison to 'Doe Deer' etc, both having light textures of electronic notes and glitches with soft vocals.

'Violent Dreams' goes back to the trance feel, with reverberated chords floating in the background behind soft vocals from Alice. This track is also simple, and sadly in my opinion one of the less memorable and thought about tracks on the album.

'Vietnam' joins low vocal drones with a moderate to upbeat rhythm. This particular use of beat reminds me of tracks from the previous album, or possibly is just a stereotypical trait/sound to come from Crystal Castles. Over the top of this a light, almost twinkly sound. Towards the end the vocals become almost child-like and innocent, but coupled with the dark electronic sounds of Crystal Castles gives the track a deeper, eerier feel. The stereotypical sounding beat used in this track is also mimicked in both 'Birds' and 'Pap Smear'.

'Not in Love' begins with a chiptune-like feel, and has almost an old video game sound to it. The child-lilke vocals are used here too.

Like 'Baptism', 'Intimate' is also another favourite of mine from this album. It too has a simple electronic melody that sticks in your head. Both these tracks are remotely different from the sound of the last album. The melody gradually speeds up from the start of the track, and low drones are introduced underneath. This track is about as minimalistic as they come, consisting of drones, an electronic melody, and an extremely simple rhythm consisting of only two electronic drum sounds. There are only a couple of changes to the sound throughout, for example, introducing an harsh, whirring sound to break it up mid way through - but soon after going back to the track as it was.

'I am Made of Chalk' goes back to the chiptune-video gamey sound and sees the album out on a more relaxed note in comparison to some of tracks on the album.

Overall I would rate this album highly. Crystal Castles have managed to improve on an already distinct and sought-after sound and have increased in popularity greatly (even being featured on things such as hollyoaks and mainstream adverts - however annoying this may be to fans). I will be awaiting my first live encounter with them on October - we shall soon see if they live up to their expectations of live performance!

Ones to Watch - Demontré

Psychedelic shoegazing guitar, post-punk rhythm section, sharp, concrete bass? Just three things that spring to mind when listening to this band. Their debut ep MASCULIN/FÉMININ is out now featuring seven tracks of shimmering yet solid sound. Vocal melodies float through each song, amongst ambient sounds that weave in and out of spaces in the tracks. The atmosphere and the tension builds and then slackens, from the catapulting segue of 'Vale of Health' to the low-key, piano-led, somewhat dubiously titled 'The Lion King'. With any luck you'll leave satisfied, because Demontré appear finally to have fulfilled their potential.

Video of the Week - I Blame Coco - 'Playwright Fate'

Eliot Sumner, aka Coco Sumner of I Blame Coco, has a very distinct and unique voice. Being the daughter of Sting, she grew up surrounded by music and from the age of fifteen started working on an album. At seventeen, Coco signed a multi-record deal with island records. Since then she spent time rewriting and recording the album 'The Constant' (debut single was released in February 2010 along with a music video - 'Caesar' featuring Robin). Fifteen songs were recorded, but only thirteen made it to the final album. This is one song which did make it, although acoustically and accompanied by Coco's 'rough around the edges'I much prefer her solo acoustic rendition.

Video of the Week - The Temper Trap - 'Love Lost'

A great follow up to their hit 'Sweet Disposition', also used on the soundtrack for '500 Days of Summer'. As a support act for Florence and the Machine in 2009 I was impressed by their live performance and how they captured the audiences attention - even though at the time they weren't well known. I would expect bigger and better things to come from this band and they are definitely ones to watch.

Bat for Lashes - Two Suns, Album Review

Bat for Lashes is a one woman act consisting of British singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Natasha Khan. ‘Two Suns’ – her second album - was released back in April 2009 and slowly, but surely, has been rising in popularity – also leading her to receive a nomination for Best British Female Solo Act at the Brit Awards 2010.

Voice is Khan’s primary instrument, it inviting us into her world from the get-go with a soft vulnerability that enthrals the listener. The opener begins acapella, draws us in (“I will rise now / And go about the city”). Inspired by her travels and composed across the globe , ’Two Suns’ invites us to join the protagonist on her travels from a cityscape to a countryscape which is particularly evident from ‘Two Planets’ and ‘Travelling Woman’. The album begins softly with ‘Glass’ as she immediately draws us into the haunting atmosphere. Voice is Khan’s primary instrument, it inviting us into her world from the get-go with a soft vulnerability that enthrals the listener.

‘Daniel’ is relatively up tempo in comparison to the rest of the album. My favourite song, and is about her childhood crush, Daniel LaRusso from the Karate Kid.

She talks a lot throughout of Pearl, her alter ego. She distances herself from this character while at the same time acknowledging that Pearl is one side of her personality. ‘Siren Song’ and ‘Pearl’s Dream’ – both of which have Pearl as their protagonist – are lyrically beautiful, portraying the sense of loneliness, longing and bewilderment that oftentimes accompanies one on their travels.

I thoroughly enjoyed this album however it’s a grower. Upon first listen it is quite forgettable but once it has been played a few times its hard to stop listening. The haunting sound of Natasha Khan’s voice, consistent throughout the album, has what it takes to give the willing listener a healthy bit of escapism.

With the recent Brit nomination received by Bat for Lashes it seems that Khan’s efforts as a composer, vocalist and instrumentalist haven’t gone unnoticed. With any luck she will gather some attention and praise, much deserved.

Video of the Week - The XX - 'Crystalised' Acoustic

This particular rendition of The XX's 'Crystalised' shows off Oliver and Romy's raw voices and is a different twist on the more electronic sounds of the album.

The Drums - The Drums, Album Review

The Drums formed in 2008 and moved to New York, following work with other groups previously, they are Jonny Pierce on vocals, his vocals deliver outstanding, simple lyrics with amazing clarity and quality, Jacob Graham and Adam Kessler, on guitars, deliver amazing and addictive scratchy guitar melodies and huge, high bass lines and Connor Hanwick keeps the band in check with his simple, upbeat drumming brilliantly, as this band show us yet another tweak to indie rock with this wonderful blend of indie pop.

'Best Friend' is the first track on the album, it’s an upbeat track, kicked straight into life with upbeat drumming and warm, high bass, the bass gives this track its depth and its brilliance and it sounds like the 80’s at their best. The lovely sections of guitar melodies add even more warmth and another layer of pop brilliance. Pierce’s vocals too are wonderful and the simple lyrics are just as immense.

'Me And The Moon', is more of the same, drums, bass and guitar working together superbly, the track is quicker in rhythm and the lyrics warm the soul, musically awesome, vocally brilliant, with lashings of samples and effects to boot.

'Let’s Go Surfing' is a happy, upbeat track and by now I’m absolutely intoxicated by the drums and bass. Pierce’s vocals are again flawless and the breaks in singing for whistling just broaden your smile even further.

'Book Of Stories' begins with simple high bass before gentle drums and percussion kick in, we hear a different style here, soft vocals and a simple structure, there is a real 1950’s pop meets the 80’s here, the harmonies are catchy, the bass brilliant, the short passages of guitar simple and the addition of gentle synthed keys wonderful, it’s a psychedelic trip of everything that’s great about simple music done well.

'Skippin’ Town', a great track with that fantastic bass and drum collaboration again, fast, high guitar strings, full of effects, brilliantly simple lyrics, great vocals and ultra catchy chorus’s and harmonies. Happiness and brilliance summed up in one amazing track.

'Forever and Ever Amen', uses faster drums, more use of wonderfully high guitar strings and catchy bass setting. Synthed keys add extra layers as each simple layer soon builds and becomes a complex mix of musical excellence. The vocals and lyrics are top notch again and the melodies just add to the pop appeal.

'Down By The Water', the first solemn track, much slower and deeper in sound with plodding bass and gentle percussion, the lyrics for the first time contain sorrow and they are delivered with a real pain and atmosphere through Pierce’s amazing vocal range. This track illustrates the diverse range this group have. This time the keyboards add despair and sadness instead of the pop nature before, the melodies too sadden as the group play with your emotions.

'It Will All End In Tears', is a blend of upbeat drums, high bass and guitar melodies, with contradicting mellow lyrics and desperate, emotion filled vocals, remember The Smiths? This track is a blend of all things great about the Manchester scene I mentioned earlier, yet this group are New Yorkers, it shows great depth, thoughtfulness and class. A very clever track.

'We Tried', is another medley of early pop, the chorus is as full of vocal depth as it is catchy, there is a distance between the instruments and vocals during the verse, before the track explodes with each chorus, bringing the vocals right back with the rest of the group and firing up the tempo, while samples and echoes are thrown in brilliantly for good measure.

'I Need Fun In My Life', is another example of awesome high bass right at the front of the track with just as brilliant drums right behind, passages of guitar melodies here and there added to this and you have to tell yourself this is not New Order, because that amazing sound is there, no doubt about it. More Smith’s style lyrics and the vocals to match round off another fantastic track.

'I’ll Never Drop My Sword', is the first time we here strummed guitars, this coupled with the deep bass and soft percussion and melodic nature provides us with another show of diverse talent. Vocally this track is brilliant as the ranges rise and fall seamlessly with the music also. Another catchy sing-a-long.

'The Future', ends the album and takes everything that has so far been great about this album, high bass riffs, soft guitar riffs and melodic guitar sections, diverse and deep vocals, warming backing harmonies, upbeat drumming and percussion and extremely well written lyrics and chucks it all together into a medley of musical brilliance.

I think it is clear to see that I absolutely love this awesome album. They have managed to take some of the best influences, the UK and more precisely, the Manchester music scene over the last 30 odd years have had to offer, mix it all together and add their own twists and dimensions to what is a catchy, clever and extremely good, unique sound.

Florence and the Machine - Cosmic Love Tour 2010, Blackpool

This being my third time seeing the red-headed machine, I knew to expect a memorable and epic performance and was certainly not disappointed. After finding out the line up before the gig I also eagerly anticipated the main support act’s performance -The Drums from New York, and they didn’t disappoint. Having been the first time seeing this band I didn’t know what to expect but they sounded just as good live as they do on their recordings – which is always a good sign!

Front woman Florence Welch, dressed all in white, started the show with ’Howl’ before blasting through ’My Boy Builds Coffins’, ’Girl With One Eye’ and ’Between Two Lungs’ in quick succession. The Southerner wowed the crowd with the power of her voice – and anyone seeing her for the first time will have been blown away by the sound of her live performance.

‘Drumming Song’ was received with a chorus of claps from the crowd, while ’Blinding’ featured Welch wearing a shawl over her head and lit by strobe lights – always the quirky individual. I felt slightly sorry for her when she stated that she was so happy to be performing under Blackpool Tower itself, when in actual fact she was slightly behind it and the whole crowd shouted back at her stating this.

The set design was the same as the previous tour; a floral backdrop and props of bouquets and bird cages littered the stage. The set list was also virtually the same, apart from a change of opening song and maybe a couple of others swopped around in the middle. Before leaving the stage in preparation for the encore she sang two of her biggest hits to date, ‘You’ve Got the Love’ (originally by Candi Station) and ‘Dog Days Are Over’. Both songs received a great reaction from the crowd. For Dog Days Florence had the crowd jump up and down from the chorus (“run fast for your mother” etc) and as this particular gig was situated in the Empress Ballroom the floors were springy and the crowd were bouncing all over the place!

For the encore Florence and her machine performed ‘Kiss With a Fist’ and ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up). It seemed to me that the night had flown by far too quickly, even though she had sang through the entire album and included new songs and songs not featured on the album itself – this was more than likely because everyone was entranced by her and her music that time seemed to whiz by unknowingly. After climbing on top of one of the huge speakers placed at the side of the stage to finish ‘Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up)’ she clambered down and left the stage after emotionally thanking the audience. At the previous gig in Manchester she got so emotional she was crying slightly as she did this, and stopped mid-song on the encore to watch the crowd singing back at her and her face was lit up (being her first major solo tour I’m guessing she didn’t expect such an awesome reaction).

I would recommend to anyone to go and see Florence and the Machine themselves as the album, although still sounding near perfect, doesn’t give justice to her live voice and performance when you’re actually there.
